Profile; ?>

The Şamran Canal structure is dating back to BC 800s. Several partial rehabilitations have been applied until nowadays. This is a unique structure because of several reasons. There are 14 inscriptions found in the canal. The canal has one of the oldest water bridge passing over a river in the world (may be the oldest). The canal is supplying around 5-6,000ha area and it is still functional. There are special carved rocks conveying water and still in use now. Also, there are around 12m retaining walls supporting the canal, which can still be seen. The walls were built via stones, lightest of which are around 50kgs. The supporting walls were built in semi-cyclopen style. It is accepted one of the most important historic remnant in Turkey. The region where the irrigation project is applied is one of the most fertile areas in Turkey and provides direct contribution to local people around 90% of whom get their income merely from agriculture sector. Current Water Engineers of Turkey, believe that this canal is very innovative and brings several structure to water and irrigation field of civilization.

The canal is located in South-East part of Turkey near to Mesopotamia Region where wonderful civilizations have lived such as Urartian, Babylonian, Rome, Byzantine, Seljuks, Ottoman and finally Turkey. So, the irrigation heritage has experienced many different wars, attacks, and interventions. Nevertheless, this structure has been rehabilitated many times as it is very valuable and usable for people who live in that region. Some inscriptions found in the site were smuggled. In time, some parts of canals were deteriorated due to thoughtless usage of water. Also, some structures were broken because of long age. So, in 2010s General Directory of State Hydraulic Works and Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey started projects to rehabilitate the structure to make the water available for local farmers and to attract tourists. Now the irrigation project is in good condition and are visited around 100,000 people in a single year. Nevertheless, more promotion and publicity is needed to attract more people.
