ICID VISION 2030: Vision, Mission and Organization Goals


VISION: Water secure world free of poverty and hunger through sustainable rural development

MISSION: Working together towards sustainable agriculture water management through inter-disciplinary approaches to economically viable, socially acceptable and environmentally sound irrigation, drainage and flood management.

SIX ORGANISATIONAL GOALS TO REALISE VISION


GOAL A: Enable higher crop productivity with less water and energy
ICID to advocate with the national governments and funding agencies to make strategic choices that favour increased profitability and productivity in energy efficient manner through sustainable agricultural water management. The following strategies are being adopted to achieve this goal:

  • Modernizing Irrigation Systems
  • Improving O&M of Irrigation Systems
  • Implementing Water Saving Techniques and Technologies
  • Promoting Institutional Reforms
  • Supporting Water Productivity Enhancement
  • Improving Performance of Irrigation Systems
  • Using Wastewater or Poor-Quality Water for Irrigation
  • Encouraging Participatory Management of Irrigation Systems

GOAL B: Be a catalyst for change in policies and practices
ICID to provide guidance to water policy analysts on experiences with the modelling principals and latest tools for simulating development scenari
os to generate knowledge which can serve as a catalyst for policy changes. The following strategies are being adopted to achieve this goal:

  • Supporting Development of Appropriate Policies
  • Promoting Risk Management Approaches
  • Integrated Irrigation and Drainage Management
  • Encouraging Development of Drought Management Policies
  • Encouraging Development of Integrated Flood Management Strategies
  • Helping Development of Climate Change Adaptation Strategy
  • Advocate for Maintaining Balance between Development and Environment

GOAL C: Facilitate exchange of information, knowledge and technology
ICID to work towards the exchange of information, knowledge and new technologies, duly recognizing the local wisdom, in order to facilitate analysis of trade-offs to maintain the economic efficiency of agricultural production and minimising the adverse environmental impacts. 
The following strategies are being adopted to achieve this goal:

  • Providing Knowledge-sharing Platform for AWM Professionals
  • Promoting and Providing Network Platform for Irrigation and Drainage Stakeholders
  • Promoting Regional Cooperation
  • Compile, Collate and Share Knowledge and Experiences
  • Dissemination of Data, Information, Tools, Knowledge and Know-How 

GOAL D: Enable cross-disciplinary and inter-sectoral engagement
ICID network would make available the required information in respect of irrigation, drainage and flood management to all the relevant stakeholders in the language suitable for their appreciation. Where required, platform for inter-disciplinary networking would be facilitated for dialogues between various groups. The following strategies are being adopted to achieve this goal:

  • Providing Platform for Various Stakeholders of AWM
  • Developing Technical Documents in Non-technical Language
  • Facilitate Development of Inter-sectoral Platforms Involving NCs
  • Synergetic Engagement with Regional and International Partners

GOAL E: Encourage research and support the development of tools to extend innovation into field practices
ICID network would encourage research and provide technical support on the latest innovations available in the agriculture water domain to the government and non-governmental entities to help in the outreach into rural communities. The following strategies are being adopted to achieve this goal:

  • Support Improving Research Prioritization in the Countries
  • Strengthening Extension and Outreach Services with AWM information
  • Developing and Promoting Tools for AWM
  • Research on History of Irrigation and Drainage and Lessons Learned from the past
  • Compilation of Global Data Sets on Irrigation and Drainage
  • Dissemination of Useful Research Outputs

GOAL F: Facilitate capacity development
ICID would work towards training and fostering young professionals, continuous training of professionals, promoting irrigation and drainage as relevant academic topics in education and training within the context of integrated land and water management and will foster closer connections with various stakeholders including farmers through national committees. The following strategies are being adopted to achieve this goal:

  • Enhancing Institutional Capacity Development in Member Countries
  • Support Capacity Development Activities of Member Countries
  • Technical Training of Professionals from Member Countries
  • Developing and Sharing AWM Knowledge Base
  • Providing Technical Support to NCs

To align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, ICID started a systematic review of its objectives, goals and activities and established a Consultative Group (CG) in 2014. The Group undertook intensive discussions and sought inputs through questionnaires from National Committees and Working Group experts. The outcomes of these efforts are covered into 'A Road Map to Vision 2030'.
