Dr. P. L. Patel is Professor (HAG) of Hydraulics and Water Resources in Department of Civil Engineering, Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat, India. He has recently been appointed as Deputy Director of SVNIT, Surat, India. Prior to joining SVNIT in 2007, he worked as Reader, Civil Engineering Department in Delhi College of Engineering (now DTU) for eight years. Prior to working at DCE, he served as Assistant Executive Engineer in Border Roads Organization (BRO) from 1995-1999. He did his Bachelor in Civil Engineering from Government Engineering College, Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, India and, then, pursued his Master and Doctoral Degrees in Civil Engineering from the, then, University of Roorkee, now Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, India.
He has more than 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences of repute. He has guided more than 9 PhD and 39 M.Tech Theses. He has also served in various academic positions in SVNIT Surat such as Dean (Academics), Head of Civil Engineering Department, Dean (Research & Consultancy), Dean (PG), etc. He was also instrumental in setting up a Centre of Excellence (CoE) on 'Water Resources & Flood Management' as Project coordinator in the Institute through a research grant from World Bank sponsored TEQIP-II. The CoE has state-of-the-art computational and experimental facilities consisting of a Computational Hydraulics Laboratory, Advanced Hydraulics Laboratory and CoE Library with many relevant books on Water Resources Engineering. He has organized various short-term training programs aimed at capacity building of the researchers, academicians and field practitioners in the field of Water Resources Engineering.
