Irrigation Services Certification

The Irrigation Association (IA) is a membership organization, founded in 1949 in the U.S. that includes over 2,000 American irrigation companies and professionals in agriculturelandscape and golf. IA promotes efficient irrigation technologies, products and services in an effort to ensure water is available for irrigation for future generations. Members can include irrigation equipment and system manufacturers, dealers, distributors, designers, consultants, contractors, educators, government entities, technical members, water providers and end users.

Since 1983, IA has offered training courses and education classes through its Select Certified program. Certification programs include:

  • Certified Irrigation Designer (CID)
  • Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor (CLIA)
  • Certified Golf Irrigation Auditor (CGIA)
  • Certified Landscape Water Manager (CLWM)
  • Certified Agricultural Irrigation Specialist (CAIS)
  • Certified Agricultural Water Manager (CAWM)

IA-certified irrigation contractors, landscape/turf irrigation designers, and golf and landscape irrigation auditors qualify to become Environmental Water Sense partners.

Water Sense is a partnership program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), that seeks to protect the future of nation's water supply by offering people a simple way to use less water with water-efficient products, new homes, and services.

The program seeks to help consumers make smart water choices that save money and maintain high environmental standards without compromising performance. Products and services that have earned the Water Sense label have been certified to be at least 20 percent more efficient without sacrificing performance.

EPA set the final specifications for certification programs for irrigation professionals to address both efficient irrigation system components and services. This will help customers identify professional service providers that embrace and encourage the use of water-efficient practices to enhance performance and efficiency.

Water Sense has recognized certification programs for irrigation professionals that meet the specification criteria. The specifications address certification programs in three categories: Irrigation Auditor, Irrigation Installation and Maintenance Professional, and Irrigation Designer.

In order to use the label, the certifying organization must have signed a partnership agreement with EPA and have applied for and been accepted to use the label for its certification program(s).
